Migrating to the cloud is no longer about moving servers: the focus is on modernising with discernment
Companies are reviewing their migrations to avoid moving the same limitations and costs they had in traditional infrastructure to the cloud.

News summary
The first wave of cloud migrations was marked by urgency. Many companies moved virtual machines with almost no changes to close data centres, gain flexibility or respond to new needs. That approach allowed for rapid progress, but also left costly environments that were difficult to optimise.
The current conversation focuses more on modernising than moving. Before migrating an application, organisations analyse whether it is better to keep it as it is, reconfigure it, convert some parts into managed services or even retire it. Not everything needs containers or complex architectures; sometimes the best decision is to simplify.
Cost is also designed from the outset. Capacity reservations, auto-scaling, tiered storage and shutting down non-production environments can reduce expenditure, but only if the application adapts to those possibilities.
Security must be part of the same process. Migrating a server with old accounts, unnecessary ports and legacy configurations does not eliminate its risks. The cloud offers identity controls, logging and segmentation that should be incorporated during the transformation.
Another important factor is operations. A modern architecture that the team does not know how to maintain can be worse than a simpler solution. Therefore, training and automation must accompany the technology.
A good migration is not the one that finishes fastest, but the one that leaves behind an environment that is easier to operate, protect and scale.
Before starting a migration, an inventory of dependencies avoids surprises. Databases, integrations, licensing, maintenance windows and latency requirements can completely change the strategy. Migrating in waves and measuring performance, cost and stability after each one allows for learning before tackling the most critical systems.
