Cybersecurity for Industrial and Operational Technology (OT) Environments

We protect your plant-floor technology (OT/ICS) to ensure production continuity and safety, applying best practices from the IEC 62443 framework to reduce the risk of cyberattacks without disrupting your operations.

  • IT & OT Network Separation
  • Secure Remote Access for Third Parties
  • Asset Inventory and Control
  • Operationally Safe Patching

What is Industrial or OT Cybersecurity?

Industrial or Operational Technology (OT) cybersecurity is the set of practices and technologies designed to protect industrial control systems (ICS), such as SCADA, HMIs, PLCs, and other devices that govern production processes. Unlike office-based IT cybersecurity, its primary goal is not just to protect data, but to ensure the availability, integrity, and safety of physical operations.

The focus in OT is on business continuity and the safety of people and machinery. An incident on the plant floor can cause production stoppages, quality defects, equipment damage, or physical safety hazards. Therefore, solutions must be compatible with often legacy systems and cannot compromise the performance or stability of operations.

Solutions

A service for businesses that cannot afford production downtime

Our OT cybersecurity solutions are aimed at industrial companies where plant-floor technology is critical. We help production managers, maintenance heads, and engineers protect their processes without interfering with daily operations.

  • Manufacturing companies with automated production lines.
  • Companies in water management, energy, or other critical infrastructure sectors.
  • Businesses with machinery requiring remote access for manufacturer maintenance.
  • Organisations that need visibility of the assets connected to their plant network.

Service Components

How we protect your industrial environment

We start with an audit to understand your system architecture and criticality. From there, we design and implement an improvement plan tailored to your plant's specific needs, based on the IEC 62443 standard framework.

Network Segmentation (Zones & Conduits)

We isolate the plant network (OT) from the office network (IT) to prevent an incident in one from spreading to the other. We create security zones and control the traffic between them (conduits) to protect your most critical assets.

Secure Remote Access for Third Parties

We create specific, temporary, and monitored access channels so that machine maintainers and external suppliers can carry out their work without needing a permanent VPN that exposes the internal network.

Asset Inventory and Visibility

We deploy tools to discover and catalogue all devices connected to the OT network, identifying operating systems, versions, and known vulnerabilities to provide a complete overview of the environment.

SCADA/HMI System Backups

We design and manage specific backup plans for your control and visualisation systems, ensuring they can be restored quickly in the event of hardware failure, a cyberattack, or human error.

Compatible Patch Management

We establish a controlled process to evaluate, validate, and apply security updates and software patches, prioritising compatibility and operational stability so as not to affect production.

Collaboration

A Team Effort: Seintec, the Client, and Manufacturers

Protecting an OT environment requires close collaboration between all parties to ensure security measures are both effective and compatible with operations.

Seintec's Responsibilities

  • Auditing the OT network and systems.
  • Designing the security architecture.
  • Implementing the agreed solutions.
  • Managing monitoring and support.
  • Coordinating implementation with third parties.

The Client's Responsibilities

  • Providing access to the plant and systems.
  • Defining the criticality of processes.
  • Approving maintenance windows.
  • Managing the relationship with machinery manufacturers.
  • Reporting changes to the plant network.

The Manufacturer's/Supplier's Responsibilities

  • Informing about their equipment's connectivity requirements.
  • Providing software patches and updates.
  • Validating the compatibility of security solutions with their machinery.
  • Collaborating during incident resolution.

Why Seintec

Our Own Technical Team and a Single Point of Contact

Founded in Osona in 2023 by a team with over 15 years of experience, at Seintec you deal directly with the engineer responsible for your project. We don't subcontract or rely on intermediaries. This close relationship allows us to gain a deep understanding of your factory's environment and make agile decisions.

Our Own Datacentre in Osona

We have our own datacentre in Sant Miquel de Balenyà (Barcelona), with a 60 m² server room. This gives us the flexibility to host cybersecurity management systems, jump servers for remote access, or backups of your OT systems in a secure, sovereign infrastructure under our direct control.

Scope of Service

Limitations and Conditions

To ensure transparency, our proposals clearly define the scope of our responsibilities. Our goal is to be your technology partner, always respecting the boundaries of industrial operations.

  • We do not modify PLC code or control logic.
  • The service does not include the purchase of industrial software licences or specific hardware from machinery manufacturers, unless specified in the proposal.
  • Changes are always implemented during scheduled maintenance windows agreed with the client, so as not to affect production.
  • Incident response and resolution times (SLAs) are defined by the terms of the maintenance agreement.
  • Seintec is not certified to the IEC 62443 standard, but we use this family of standards as the reference framework for designing and implementing our solutions.

How We Implement Your Industrial Cybersecurity Strategy

  1. 01

    1. Review and Audit

We conduct an initial free review for a preliminary diagnosis. For a full analysis, we offer an in-depth audit (the cost of which is deducted from the final project) where we map assets, networks, and vulnerabilities.

  2. 02

    2. Solution Design

Using the audit data, we design a prioritised action plan. We define the zones and conduits, remote access policies, and the backup and patching plan, based on the IEC 62443 framework.

  3. 03

    3. Controlled Implementation

We execute the plan in phases, starting with the highest-impact, lowest-risk improvements. All work is carried out in coordination with the plant team and during hours that do not affect production.

  4. 04

    4. Ongoing Operation and Support

Once the solutions are implemented, we offer a support and maintenance service to manage monitoring, apply patches, handle incidents, and adapt the security to new changes on the plant floor.

Frequently Asked Questions about OT Cybersecurity

Is it necessary to stop production to implement these improvements?

Not as a general rule. We plan all work for pre-agreed, scheduled maintenance windows with the client to minimise or eliminate any impact on production.

My machine's manufacturer needs remote access. How do you make it secure?

We set up a controlled remote access system that doesn't require a traditional, always-on VPN. Access is granted to named individuals, only when necessary, for a limited time, and all activity is logged.

What happens if a security patch isn't compatible with my SCADA system?

Our priority is operational stability. Before applying any patch to a critical system, we validate it in a test environment if possible, or consult the manufacturer. If there is a risk, it is not applied until a safe solution is available.

What is 'zones and conduits' segmentation in IEC 62443?

It's a fundamental strategy that involves dividing the factory network into isolated sub-networks (zones) based on their function or criticality. Communication between these zones is controlled through secure gateways (conduits), such as firewalls, to contain incidents and limit their spread.

Do you have an emergency service for cybersecurity incidents on the plant floor?

Yes, we have a 24/7 emergency response service on 936 940 176, available both for clients with a maintenance contract and for companies needing one-off assistance with a critical incident.

Are you certified to the IEC 62443 standard?

No, Seintec as a company is not certified to this standard. However, our technical team uses it as a best practice framework and methodological guide for the design and implementation of all our industrial cybersecurity solutions.
